It’s official Belfast Airport long stay parking is the cheapest (according to a Which survey).

Belfast International is the cheapest major airport in the UK to park your car on-site for a week, a survey has found.

According to research carried out by Which? magazine, Aldergrove is one of the few big airports at which it can be more cost effective to park on-site than off.

Holidaymakers leaving their vehicle in the airport’s long-stay site for a week can expect to pay just £21 if booked in advance on the Internet.

Now that is cheap, just £3 a day!

Which? says this is in comparison with £24 in one of the off-site, independently-run car parks nearby.

£24 is still very good value for a week.

The watchdog magazine checked prices on- and off-site for seven days’ parking at the UK’s 11 biggest airports.

All prices quoted were correct on June 13 and 14 and were for a booking from July 1-8. The off- site car parks were within ten minutes’ transit of the airport.

Of the 11 surveyed, Belfast International was by far the cheapest, with Q-Park offering a space for £3 per day.

The second-cheapest on-site airport parking lot was at Birmingham airport at £43.40 - more than double Aldergrove.

Now that’s the sort of airport parking price I’m used to.

London Stansted’s on-site cost was a hefty £50.40 for a week.

Despite the massive difference in these rates with Belfast Inter national, it is still cheaper to park on-site at Stansted. Off-site parking for a week there costs £69.

And a rip off even if it was half that price!

Along with Belfast International and Stansted, Luton was the only other airport surveyed where it was cheaper to park on-site, although only by 80p. A week there cost £50.40.

While Aldergrove might be the cheapest in the UK for parking, how do its prices compare with other Ulster airports?

According to the George Best Belfast City Airport yesterday, seven days’ parking will cost £36, although it does offer special discounts to travellers parking for more than two weeks.

And at the City of Derry airport in Eglinton, seven days’ on-site parking will cost £28.

Looks like Belfast airport parking has the rest of the UK beat by far when it comes to parking prices.

Q-Park sparked something of a price war at Belfast International in May when it announced prices at its on-site car park were dropping to £3 per day over the Internet.

Now that makes sense, I wonder if it’s cost effective to offer parking at this low rate? We might see some operators closing down at Belfast airport which isn’t good for the consumer.

The Dutch company took over management of the airport in January.
